Tantalum is one of the rarest metals on Earth, prized for its extraordinary density, corrosion resistance, and unique hue. Its scarcity and difficulty to work with make it a true connoisseur’s material, seldom seen in watchmaking.
The challenges of machining tantalum are formidable. It resists cutting, rapidly blunts tools, and demands constant precision. In the creation of the ten dials for the TANTOSTER, the machine head was replaced many times, as tantalum relentlessly wore down each tool. This process required both patience and determination, underscoring the rarity and resilience of the material itself.
By engraving tantalum with the refined “grand panier” guilloché, Sartory-Billard elevates this most demanding of metals into a poetic canvas — merging endurance with artistry, permanence with elegance.
